Q&A
Do the needles hurt?
Acupuncture needles are not like hypodermic needles, which are large and hollow and are used to either inject substances into the body or pull substances out, which can be painful. Acupuncture needles are used to stimulate acupuncture points. They are very small, solid, pre-sterilized, stainless steel needles, more like a pin, and not much thicker than a strand of human hair. The sensation upon insertion varies from point to point and from person to person and can range from no sensation at all to a brief ache or tingling sensation. The fewest number of needles necessary are used in each treatment.
How long are the treatments?
Your first appointment will last about 1 to 1.5 hours and will consist of a health history and a brief physical exam. During this time my main intention is to get to know you and to understand your health concerns so that I can focus treatments on your individual concerns. Subsequent appointments will last between 45 minutes to an hour.
What can I expect to feel after each acupuncture session?
While each person's response to acupuncture is unique, many people feel a sense of ease and relaxation, a more positive outlook, increased energy, improved sleep, decreased pain, and increased awareness of how body symptoms relate to lifestyle, attitudes, and emotions.
How many treatments will I need?
Initially, weekly appointments are recommended in order to create harmony and balance within your body. After 6 to 8 weeks, treatments may be spread out to every other week, every three weeks, monthly, and eventually seasonally. Of course, the frequency of the treatments varies with each individual.
What insurances do you accept?
I am in network with all Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Aetna plans. Your fee will depend on your individual health plan. Copays are expected at the time of service.
